How Can I Enter an Emoji In Messages Using My Keyboard?

How can I enter an emoji using my keyboard? I often reply to messages using my macbook pro.

On Slack I can use (:thumb) to enter a thumbs up emoji – I cannot do the same when sending a message on my mac. I have to use the mouse to click on the emoji icon and select one.

In most Mac apps you can use either Control+Command+Space to bring up the Emoji viewer. On newer up-to-date Macs you can also use FN+e.

If you don't want to use the pointer to select an emoji at all, you can just type at that point to search for the character. For instance, type "thumb." This will focus on just the characters that match that term. Then you an use the arrow keys to move to the one you want, and Return to select it.
