How Can I View the Clipboard?

Using a Mac Pro, late 2013, laptop, O.S. v10.12.4 Sierra

Is it possible to access – to check / confirm – existing contents of clipboard before such as potentially ” overwriting ” and losing something important, before pasting in an email, copied details / information from a pre compiled drafted Pages document, to subsequently paste into a Chat Line form when
” chatting live”.

Yes. If you switch to the Finder, you can choose Edit, Show Clipboard. You can see most clipboards, particularly text. But more complex things, like selections in Photoshop or other odd clipboard items can't be easily represented visually.
You can also, of course, simply paste into a blank document of some sort to see what is in the clipboard. And if you use a clipboard manager like JumpCut, CloudClip, ClipMenu or something similar then you can use their menubar icons to see the current clipboard as well as access previous clipboard content. Using those clipboard managers makes it harder to overwrite something important too, since you have a history to access.
