I sometimes take multiple shots of one subject and it helps me choose if I see the photo number under the picture. I am not giving each one a title because I will only use one of them. how can I make the photo number visible?

You can see the filename in the Info window. Bring it up with Window, Info, or Command+I. It will show the filename and other information of the currently selected photo. No need to close it and bring it up again either, as it will change to show the new info as you change photo selections.
Thanks Gary. Not quite as easy as if it is automatically displayed below the photo... but I will learn to live with it.
