How Do I Erase a Back Up To Remove Partion?

I want to reformat an external back up drive and remove the partions on it.

    You would use the Disk Utility app for this. I would completely erase and reformat the drive as a single partition. It is not a good idea to use a backup drive as anything other than a backup drive.
    In Disk utility, select the drive itself on the left, not the volumes on the drive. Then use the Erase button to reformat the drive. The will wipe the entire drive and start you off fresh.
