I have a 2009 iMac, 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, running El Capitan 10.11.3. I need new wireless headphones to connect with the iMac. Got B&Olufsen H7 wireless. They paired with my iPhone 5S immediately and the sound is wonderful. They paired with the iMac but sound is awful, very rough and a lot of static type noise, impossible to listen.
Searched online and discovered that the iMac has 2.0 bluetooth which is meant really for keyboard/mouse, both of which I have. The H7 headphones have 4.1 bluetooth. I see also that there are transmitters which are supposed to help, but there are hundreds of them (minefield!) I am not technically savvy!!! and am completely out of my depth now.
So … can it be made to work?
If so, what exactly do I need to buy?
I don’t want the cost of a new Mac.
I would like to keep the B&O headphones if possible – they are gorgeous and comfortable.
I do need wireless as I listen to audiobooks and music, also iPlayerTV and films. Please help!

Seems like you have already figured out what you need to buy: one of those peripheral Bluetooth transmitting devices. I would just look for one that gets high ratings, is known to work well with Macs, and is in your price range. When I search for "usb bluetooth adapter" on Amazon a lot comes up, but there are clearly ones with tons of good reviews. Search the reviews for references to iMac and go with one that others say works well.
