How Do I Get Podcasts To Play In the Order They Were Released?

I have an iPod Classic. I listen to podcasts a lot. Some, like training casts and other ones that have modules or multiple episodes should be played in the order the vendor released them. I see no way to do that. Apple allows them to be played in the order that they came on to the device. This seems like a big mistake on Apple’s part. “Release Date” is an obvious attribute that should be able to be used as a sort key. I am using this on an iPod Classic but I assume that this works the same way on any current iTunes driven device. Thanks in advance for your help.

Actually, on modern devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) you have a Podcasts app. This app has all sorts of features and can download podcasts directly. You don't need to go through iTunes on your Mac to get them. You can even download episodes while on the go.
In that app you can select the play order in the settings for each podcast: Newest to Oldest or Oldest to Newest.
As for the iPod Classic, there's no easy way for me to test that. But couldn't you make a playlist in iTunes and put the episodes in any order you wish? And then sync that playlist? Or even create a smart playlist and have it automatically sort new episodes?

Thanks Gary. I did try that. I went to the Apple Support Community and asked the question a year or so ago. That was one piece of advice I got. I think I will continue to use my iPod to store and play the 7000 plus songs I have and move to my iPad for podcasts. Thanks again.
