I know that there is a way to go back to the original search results after you have used one of the search results links and drilled down (browsed from a result link). I looked but could not find it in help. I appreciate your help.

The feature you are looking for is called "snapback." You can find it in the menu bar under History, Search Results Snapback. Command+Option+S is the default keyboard shortcut.
Note that it only works if you use the address field at the top of the browser to do you search. If you instead go to the search site, and do your search there, then it doesn't activate. So if you go to Google.com and search, it won't work.
An alternative I use in the Google search engine is to set my Google preferences to open clicked-on links in a new tab. This preserves my search results, plus it allows me to go back to them and open several of them for comparison.
This brings up: Can I use snapback in Apple Mail searches? Often a search will give me several options as basis for search, eg John X, John Y, etc. I choose 1 and the results are not what I want. I want to go back to the options but cannot. I must start search from scratch by typing.
Frank: Sorry, but I don't think there is any option but to type it again. Maybe if this is a common problem for you, try a quick Command+A, Command+C before hitting return, that way you can Command+V to paste the old search terms back.
