I tried to record one of my students webinars (video and audio) so I could watch it later but my Quick Time player only recorded the video, it didn’t capture the sound. ? I was told that I need to buy a separate program to capture the audio. That can’t be right?
Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

The best way to do it is to use the software that the webinar is running in. For instance, in Zoom, you can do it. You didn't mention what you were using for the webinar. Or, better yet, if the webinar creator records it have them make it available. Most of the webinar and video meetings I've attended make the recording available to watch after it is over.
Recording the screen is a subpar option, as it is kind of like using a video camera to record a TV show -- you aren't recording the video directly, but grabbing multiple frames per second from the screen. The quality won't be as good.
But if you want to do it that way, you need software that can capture both the audio and video. Pro software like Screenflow does this easily. But if you want something free, see the video I did on this subject recently: https://macmost.com/how-to-record-your-mac-screen-with-computer-audio.html
Another cheap and easy thing to do if you just want to watch it once yourself and don't care about the quality, just record the screen with QuickTime Player and set it to record the audio from the mic. Then raise the volume as much as you can so the mic picks up the sound from the speakers. Not good for most uses, but just for your own one-time use that may be good enough for your case.
By the way, for others reading this, make sure you have the permission of the webinar creator (and perhaps all participants) before you record a webinar. Naturally if a recording is offered, then this isn't a worry. But it some places it may be illegal to record someone without their permission.
