Just recently my Mac has begun connecting me with Xfinity’s neighborhood network rather than our home network (which I want). Not sure what I might have done to make this happen, but would appreciate advice on how I can make our home network the default again. Thanks in advance.

If you connect to a network just once, then it goes into your list of preferred networks and your Mac will connect to it again if it is the strongest network at the moment. So you probably connected to this free network one time, perhaps without realizing it.
To remove the network from your list, go to System Preferences, Network. Then select Wi-Fi on the left. Then click the Advanced button. Then look through the list for the offending Xfinity network. Select it and click the minus (-) button under the list. This will remove it from the list and your Mac won't automatically select it again.
If you want, it is also possible to change the priority of your wireless network. You might want to do this if you will occasionally be connecting to an Xfinity wireless network. This Google Search URL shows plenty of suggestions https://www.google.com/search?q=mac+change+wireless+network+priority .
