How Do I Use Time Machine In Sleep Mode?

Time Machine does it backup every hour, day, week etc but if the backup is up to date, example only 1 minute ago and I create a document and save it to the desktop or a folder, then put the Mac in sleep mode and not return to the computer for at least 2 hours will Time Machine backup the document/ folder in about 1 hour’s time. Or does it commence the backup only when I wake up the computer?

Yes. Time Machine will work during sleep. A lot of things will work during sleep. This feature is called Power Nap. You can read all about it here: How Power Nap works on your Mac .

Thanks Gary. I read your reply. My iMac is mid 2007 and does not have Power Nap option. So until I upgrade my iMac to a more recent model. My backup won’t occur until I wake my computer up. Only then will any changes be backed up.

Danny: So the solution is to simply not manually put your Mac to sleep when you are done working with it. Instead, let it go to sleep on its own. If it is backing up, it should wait until the backup is done before sleeping. That should give you plenty of backups per day as it should backup hourly while you are using it, and then finish the last backup before sleeping.
