I have an iMac (27″, Retina 5k, late 2015, OS X 10.11.5) and an iPad Air with iOS 10. I am impressed with the new Memories feature of the iOS 10 and wanted to display the slideshows on my iMac. When I go to system preferences, display, the AirPlay Display shows “off” with no choice to set to “on”. I’ve never changed the default settings. The Show mirroring options is checked. I am using Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse 2 and Trackpad if this makes any difference. Can you advise what I can do to get the iMac to display from the iPad?

First, I think you are misunderstanding what System Preferences, Display, the AirPlay Display is for. That is for streaming your Mac TO an AirPlay device. Not the other way around. The reason you only have "Off" is that there must not be any AirPlay devices (like an Apple TV) on your network.
Think of it this way: there are devices that you can stream FROM (iPhone, iPad, Mac) and devices that you can stream TO (Apple TV). You cannot, normally, stream TO an iMac.
Now that said, Macs are computers with lots of third=party software available that can add functionality. I use a third-party app called AirServer that lets me stream AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad TO my Mac. You install it on your Mac and then you get this extra functionality. So if you really need to do this, then look into it: https://www.airserver.com.
However, if all you need is to display Memories on your iMac, then you don't need AirPlay at all. With Sierra (out today) you get Memories in the Photos app just as it is in Photos on iOS 10. So if you are using iCloud Photo Library, you should see your Memories appear on your Mac as well as iOS devices. So you can play them directly in the Mac Photos app, just as you play them in the iOS Photos app.
Thanks. I get it now. I will likely install Sierra, though I don't intend to use iCloud Photo library. No matter, since my photos are synced to the iPad I use with iOS 10. I really like the Memories feature. I had previously spent hours assembling similar collections. Now it is done for me in Memories with an excellent set of options (editing).
