Installing Lion doesn't delete any of your files. Do you know the exact location of those files from before? If so, is that folder there? What was that location?
Did you, by any chance, create a new user, maybe? So the iWork files are with the old user's documents?
Can you find your other files?
I didn't create a new user. So far I seem to have my other files, I even have the "most recent"in numbers but nothing else. I know they're there, just where?
Did you try to search for them with Spotlight?
yes
You never said whether you knew the location of the files previously. For instance, were they in /Users/username/Documents/myworkstuff/ (as an example). Assuming you know that, what is the state of that location now? Is it there?
I create a spread sheet monthly with the same file name except for the month and year. They have the .numbers extension. I started monthly in 2009. I can only find a few from 2009, most from 2010 and only June & July from 2011. The trash has not been emptied. Besides spotlight I have scrolled though all documents and can't see the missing ones.
I think you need some first-hand help. They should be there. They should also be in your backup. Were you using Time Machine? In that case, look further back in time to find them. But I suspect that if they are not there, that you may have been saving them to another location without realizing it.
Yes I use time machine & went back & back. Same files missing. If I did move them without realizing it, where could I look? I know I wouldn't change the file name.
This is very odd. I'm pretty sure you were saving them somewhere else then, otherwise they would show up in Time Machine when you looked back. Maybe to an external disk? USB Flash drive? Network drive? Or your shared folder? DropBox?
There's really not much I can do from here to help, unfortunately.

Thanks for your help. I'll have to get some hands-on help. I'll keep looking until I can find someone. Maybe I'll get lucky. Let you know the out come. Thanks
I have the same problem--some of my financial files are missing! Please let me know if you find out where the Lion put them.
