Sounds like you installed some software that has altered the way your browser, Safari, works. Not a virus (very different) but simply something you installed yourself. I'm not sure of the exact nature of your problem, but try these things:

    1. In Safari, go to Safari, Preferences. Then go to Extensions. See anything there that could be causing the issue? Or something you don't remember installing? Or anything at all? Try disabling or deleting these extensions to see if that solves the problem.

    2. Quit Safari. Then Relaunch it but hold the Shift Key down as you do so. This will relaunch Safari but in a fresh state, with all windows closed. This gets rid of some persistent problems.

    3. Log out of your account on your Mac. Log back in. El Capitan will do some adware checks when you log back in so it may help.

Report back -- did 1 help? 2? 3? Let us know so this post can help others too.

Gary, thank you so much for the three step process of deleting an extension I had installed, that was causing the problem. It all worked in a matter of seconds!!!!
