I use something a little different than most people. Because I'm recording my video tutorials and need higher quality than you typically find in webcams, I use a real camera (Sony a6100) and then an Elgato Cam Link 4K to connect that directly to my Mac via HDMI. This gives me a direct image from the camera like it was a webcam, but I have real optics and a good sensor, not the tiny things found in webcams.

If you just want to have a webcam for FaceTime, Zoom and the like, then the built-iin FaceTime camera in your Mac (assuming you have an iMac or MacBook) should be fine. If you want to go up a step, you can get something like the Logitech Brio. I used that for a while a few years back to record my videos and I still use it for some things, like making my TikTok videos over the past few weeks.
