What Kind Of Surge Protector Is Adequate for My 2015 MBP?

I saw your recent video about battery health. I have an early 2015 MacBook Pro and it stays on my desk 99% of the time. In the video you said it was ok to leave MacBooks plugged into to power all the time to save on the battery cycle counts.

I have a power strip with decent surge protection but it’s not as good as a battery backup unit which has much higher levels of surge protection. If I leave my MBP plugged in all the time, do you recommend getting a battery back up unit with surge protection and if not, what kind of surge protection would you recommend.

You are a great resource and I’m happy to support your Patreon following as well as the courses on Udemy.

There's no reason to get a battery UPS for a MacBook, since they already have batteries. Losing power won't knock out the MacBook as it would something that needs constant AC, like an iMac.

A surge protector is probably a good idea, but I'm sure it isn't as big a deal for a MacBook as an iMac. From my basic understanding of electronics, the surge protector would help an iMac where the AC power goes into the computer. But with a MacBook, the AC only goes into the adapter. Then the power is converted to DC. So I don't think a surge would go past the power adapter. Still, you want to protect the power adapter anyway, since they aren't cheap or easy to replace.

I'd assume any good surge protector would offer fine protection. Maybe build quality is an issue with those, but I'm not sure how you would know one model is really built better than another.

But maybe someone else, someone who knows more about AC and surge protectors, could chime in with a better answer.
