Where Did the Small Apps On Desktop Go?

Are the apps that you could select on a new desk top screen e.g. conversion to metric not avialable in Catalina?

Do you mean the old Dashboard feature? The Dashboard is gone in Catalina, yes.

For the most part, they are replaced with normal apps, of course, but also the Today view of the Notification Center which has been around for a while and also has "widgets" very similar to the old Dashboard. Click on the top right corner of the menu bar, switch to "Today" if you don't already have it selected, then you'll see these widgets. You can add more using the Edit button at the bottom.

A lot of other things can be done in spotlight, such as conversions to metric, weather, etc.
