Why Does nsurlsessiond Keep Running?

Why would nsurlsessiond run in the background for months slowing my iMac down? I don’t shut my computer down at night but this syncing process never seems to be done.

That's iCloud. That process is syncing your iCloud Drive files, your photos, contacts, calendar, settings, everything. It should basically always be running as you are probably always changing files and updating things. If your connection is slow and you have a huge amount of data, like a large photo collection, that happens to be syncing, then it will have even more work to do.

What makes you think it is "slowing [your] iMac down?" It usually runs in the background without affecting anything else like that.
