Why Has Apple Suddenly Decided To Ban the Use Of One Note Web Clipper?

Having just installed the latest version of Safari the OneNote web clipper can no longer be used. If they had a similar function in the Notes app it wouldn’t be so bad but I use OneNote for saving stuff from the web (eg recipes) so basically I can’t do this anymore.

Can anyone suggest an alternative (not Evernote)? There is nothing in the Safari Extensions list.

I don’t want to pay either as the OneNote clipper is free.

No explanation from Apple of course. Just can it and lump it.

What do you mean? How has Apple banned it?

Perhaps you are using an older version that is not compatible with your version of macOS or Safari? Or maybe it isn't supported anymore? Have you tried contacting the developer or looking on their site? I see OneNote in the Mac App Store. Are you using that version, or some older one?

Is there a specific error message you are getting? If it is a Safari extension, perhaps it is the older (insecure) style of extension that is no longer supported. Maybe there is an update?

If your goal is to just save some links, why not use bookmarks? If it is to save offline copies of web pages, then why not use File, Save As (Command+s), or File, Export as PDF? Then you can create a folder of web archives or PDFs with offline versions of those pages.

I get a message saying that OneNote web clipper is no longer supported after I installed the latest version of Safari. The icon no longer appears in the toolbar. I tried to install the latest version of the clipper and the One Note website says that the Clipper is no longer available in Safari. In fact it opens the App Store Extensions window!! I am on the latest versions of everything. I will try asking MS.

Tony: So it sounds like the extension is an older one, that is no longer supported. Apple upped their security game to protect our privacy a while back, and if the browser extensions didn't follow certain rules, they are no longer allowed. Developers have had a long while to update. Some extensions may just not be possible given that they need to access too deeply in order to work as expected.
Give some thought to my suggestions for alternatives above.

Hi Gary, I just looked at the MS support pages and it seems that this is a known problem and MS are trying to sort it out with Apple. I see what you say about saving as a PDF but it was so much more convenient using the Clipper particularly as you could choose options of how to save it directly into OneNote. It seems that MS are having difficulty following Apples "rules". Thanks for your input. By the way there are no Safari Extensions that will do the job and Notes doesn't have the facility.

I have the same problem. So, on Mac I now switched to Firefoxe. The One-note web-clipper works perfectly in Firefox.

I have the same problem. I love saving web clippings to OneNote. Now the extension doesn't work. It's a small pain, but I just copy the URL to Chrome and clip from there. Come on, Guys/Gals - fix this!

Ed: Did you contact OneNote support about it?

Gary, No, I didn't. To what end? Are you suggesting that MS doesn't know about the issue and that they might fix the issue because of my contacting them? I doubt it.
I've tried many times in the past to express my disappointment and/or frustration with an issue from any of the Big 5 - always to no avail. Now I simply look for workarounds. Just this morning I changed my default browser to Chrome - now I don't have to copy the URL. Problem solved.

Ed: Microsoft probably knows about the issue. But do they know how much OneNote users want there to be a new extension? Perhaps they are deciding whether it is worth it for them to make the new extension. I know as a small-time software developer there is a big difference whether I get one or two requests from a feature, as opposed to ten or twenty. Note that you expressed yourself here about this at MacMost -- but why here not to Microsoft, the only company that can actually fix it?
As for Chrome, note that when Safari switched the way extensions are done it was to improve security. Google has mentioned doing the same thing with Chrome extensions at some point.

Gary, You make a good point about contacting MS - and shamed me into action. BTW, I started here, MacMost, because it had the most relevant answer on Google. Anyway, MS does know about the problem. See: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/safari-onenote-clipper-no-longer-available/8058d791-6890-4de8-92af-ce4d795ac641
It seems that Safari 13 blocks any 32-bit extensions and MS has not built a 64-bit version yet. A similar problem exists with the 32-bit Pocket extension.

Poor show Microsoft. A big company like you can't fix it??? I am running MAC OS Catalina with the latest Safari. I have downloaded Microsoft Office 365 and am in trial which is up to either cancel or subscribe in 1 week from now. Working with OneNote I found out to my dismay that Web Clipper is not "compatible with your browser". So, what to do? Cancel the subscription and go for default Apple Pages/Numbers/Keynotes. Happy to receive your insights and issue updates.

    Thank you.
