iTunes has a box to check if you want it to be opened when you connect your iPad to the USB port. I have that box checked, but iTunes never opens automatically when I connect the iPad. What’s that all about?

Go to System Preferences, Accounts and look in your account at Login Items. Make sure "ituneshelper.app" is there. That is what runs in the background and waits until you connect your iPhone/iPod/iPad and then launches iTunes. If it has been removed, then at least you know why.
I looked, and it's not in the Login Items, and I could also not even find the app on my HD. Would you recommend I get a copy and use it, or does it cause more problems than it's worth. I saw a few comments about that on the net.
If you really want to get it back, you can find it by going to /Applications/iTunes.app, then Right+Click and "Show Package Contents." Then it is at:
/Contents/Resources/iTunesHelper.app
