My laptop is losing power very quickly once disconnected from ac power supply.It is currently showing ‘not charging’ even thought it shows as 100%. I presume I need to buy a new battery from the apple store.

How old is the MacBook Pro? How old is the battery? How many cycles has it been through (see episode 206: http://macmost.com/monitor-your-macbook-battery.html)
This happened to me last week, I took out the battery and examined it, nothing was wrong, so I put it back in. Problem solved
