Can I Connect a Late 2013 Mac Pro 6,1 To a Thunderbolt 3 Device?

I’d like to connect my late 2013 Mac Pro 6,1 to a Thunderbolt 3 device. I’m looking to add another drive, but I don’t want to buy one that won’t be the current type, as I’m looking to upgrade my Mac later this year. I’d wait, but I need the storage now.
Thanks in advance for your time answering my questons!

What sort of "device?" I'll assume a hard drive.

Not without a converter or adapter of some sort. So I would go with a USB3 drive instead. A USB 3 connection can go up to 10 Gbps, whereas a Thunderbolt 3 one could go up to 40 Gbps. But a hard drive is way slower than either of those. So it doesn't matter. Even an SSD is slower than 10Gbps.
