Can the IF Function In Numbers Be Used To Set the Cell Background Color?

I want to use the if function to color code specific cells in a data base when the if > than or if< than statement us used. Ex A reference cell indicates that the average is 40. Can I get the if function to look at a series of cells and color code them with red for yes it is greater than the reference cell, or blue, no it is less than the reference cell. Love some help with this. ----- Bob

You don't use functions for that. You use Conditional Highlighting. So you select those cells, then use Format, Conditional Highlighting. Then you set the condition to be Greater Than and choose the reference cell as the value.

See Numbers Conditional Highlighting Based On Other Cell Values.
