How Do I Archive Messages From iCloud In Order To Conserve Cloud Space?

I am currently using my ISP’s premium mail (BT Yahoo!). It has no online email size limit.
If I start moving to Apple’s iCloud mail account I will have a pooled 5GB for email, docs, backups and whatever other services that Apple intends to stick up there.
Over a few years, a mailbox can get quite large and the 5GB would be spent. Many emails cannot be deleted for legal purposes. Is there a way to archive mail to get it out of iCloud. If that is possible, where to you store those exported emails?

You could just export your iCloud mailbox(es). Save them on your hard drive. Choose Mailbox, Export Mailbox.
Maybe a good strategy would be to store your old email into folders by year. So you have an "Archive 2012" mailbox. Then when you get far enough into 2013, export that mailbox to your computer and delete it from iCloud.
Of course it may not be as big an issue as you think. I've been using Gmail since 2004 and have 128,000+ messages. The total space they take up is only 2.6GB.
