I have a Pages file that I have been working on for 5 months, and now it will not open because the error message “the required index.xml file is missing”. How can I fix this problem?
I have an Mac El Capitan 10.11.6 early 2008 model with a Pages ’09 version 4.3.

My guess is that you have two versions of Pages installed. One if the old version, prior to 2013 (Pages 09). The other is the current version, or at least as current as El Capitan model will allow.
Try Control+clicking on the file and choosing "Open With." Do you see two Pages options there? Try it with one and then the other if that doesn't work.
This happens to me all the time. I have an old Mac from 2011. Would it make sense to uninstall pages and reinstall when updates cause me this issue? I am NOT tech savy and this is VERY frustration!!
sass: If this problem is being caused by having two versions of Pages on your Mac, just be sure to always open with the correct one. Or, delete the old Pages app and only have the latest one there.
Gary, THANKS!! I just did your "Try Control+clicking on the file and choosing “Open With.” Do you see two Pages options there? Try it with one and then the other if that doesn’t work." That was it and I needed it for Numbers. Perfect!
Gary's suggestion worked like a charm!
Your suggestion of control worked but I need to make corrections ,it will only come up in preview I cannot edit
Ethel: Sounds like you are trying to open a PDF, not a Pages document. That will open in Preview and you can't easily edit them.
