All of a sudden I’m gettin pictures instead of Icons for the Top Sites shown on my MacBook homepage. I used to have Icons and would like to know how to get them back. I’m using Catalina 10.15.2

In the latest major update to Safari in Catalina and earlier versions of macOS too, a few months back, I think Top Sites changed to always show a preview. I'm not a big user of the feature, so I'm not sure.
But if you want a screen where you can see icons instead of previews, you can certainly do that. Just choose Bookmarks, Show Favorites. This will show you icons of the pages listed in your bookmarks Favorites folder. You can then customize that folder to include exactly the pages you want. Is that what you are looking for?
Then you can set Favorites to be your stating point for new Windows and Tabs in Safari, Preferences, General.
I followed these instructions and now I have a blank homepage with no icons and no previews.
Daisy: So you set the "New Windows/Tabs Open With" (not homepage) to be your Favorites? Do you have any Favorites? Look in Bookmarks, Show Bookmarks. Is there anything listed under Favorites? If not, you've got to add some bookmarks there. Then you'll see those.
