How Do I Get Sierra If My MacBook Pro Refuses To Download?

MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2011)
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Cor i7
Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB

When I request a software update, it seems to go thru the motions, but I get no update to my OS X El Capitan. And now it shows “no update available”. Could my MacBook be too old?

Could be. But it seems to fit the requirements: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201475.
But is it really a "late 2011" or is that just when you bought it? You could certainly have bought a "2010" MacBook in 2011.
You did go to the App Store and search for Sierra there, right?
