Hi,
I have a early 2009 iMac with MacOS El Capitan version 10.11.6 which is the last OS it supports. I’m running Numbers version 3.6.2(2577) on it. But whenever I try to open a numbers file created on my MacBook / iPad which have later versions of Numbers, the iMac says “you need a newer version of Numbers to open this file”. I don’t want to scrap / upgrade an otherwise perfectly working mac. Is there a way I can get this to work?
FYI i’m using MacBook Late 2009 with High Sierra 10.13.6 with Numbers v6.1(6369) and have Numbers v5.1 on my iPhone / iPads
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In Numbers on your newer Mac, you can use File, Export and export a file as "Numbers 09" format. Then you can open that exported version in that old version on your old Mac if you need to.
But a much better solution is to get the current version of Numbers on that Mac. If it is running El Capitan then why/ not just download the newer version of Numbers from the Mac App Store? It will run it.
Thanks for the quick reply Gary. But el capitan only supports numbers v 3. Need to be on Sierra for version 4 onwards. I’m not able to download the current version of numbers from the mac app store.
Are you sure your Mac can’t update to a newer version of macOS than El Capitan? A 2009 should be able to go up a version or three from there.
Otherwise, saving as an older Numbers file format may be your only move.
hey Gary,
Sorry for the late reply. Cannot update for sure. The minimum requirement to run latest version of Numbers 6.1 is MacOs 10.13. i guess i will have to stick to using numbers in iCloud. Any other suggestions?
Vint: I realize you can't update Numbers with your current OS. I'm suggesting that you update your current OS. Your Mac can support a newer version than El Cap. Then, once you are up-to-date on that, you can get a newer version of Numbers.
Gary,
i cannot as its an Early 2009 iMac. El Capitan is the last OS it supports. Anyways, Thanks for the valuable feedback. Much appreciated.
Vint: oh, that’s a shame. Late 2009s can go all the way to High Sierra.
Yes. That’s why my MacBook late 2009 Unibody supports High Sierra and hence has the latest version of numbers as well. Thanks again for your help and advice.
