I want to permanently save and sometimes print a text message I’ve received on my iPad Air 2 or iPhone 6S Plus. I currently just take a screenshot and print that. Is there another way to do it?

That's probably the best way, especially if you want to keep the "look" of the Messages app. Otherwise, you can tap and hold a message, select Copy, and paste the text of the message into another app, like Pages, for printing.
You have better options if you are using iCloud and see these messages on your Mac as well. From there you can print and save conversations as PDFs. But there's no way to do that from the iPhone or iPad.
Awesome! Thanks for your answer. I teach an iPad/iPhone monthly workshop at our senior center and always mention MacMost as the premier online help resource. This question came up in our December workshop so I’ll show your response in the January workshop.
If you decide to go the screenshot option, you might want to consider something like the app Stitch. http://www.stitchitapp.com/
