I am thinking of purchasing a MacBook Pro as a second device to use for travelling. I already have a desktop PC that is the main archive of all my family’s documents, photos, and iTunes music library; I have been using a PC laptop for travelling. I have been storing documents (Word and PDFs) in One Drive so I can access them while travelling with the laptop PC. I also use an external hard drive connected to the desktop at home to back everything up. Is there a way of continuing to use the desktop at home to store documents, and access them while travelling with the MacBook Pro?

You can continue to use Microsoft One Drive. There is an official Mac app for it in the Mac App Store that makes the contents of your One Drive available on a Mac. I haven't used it, not being a One Drive user, but I assume it works the same way Dropbox does, which is another similar alternative that works between both Mac and Windows.
Use Google drive or iCloud drive. There is also an option to set the Mac up with data from a PC or u can use the app in utilities folder(I forgot it's name ð).
