How Do I Start Page Numbers On the Second Page Of a Document I’m Typing On Pages for an iPad?

I want page numbering to start on the second page of a document on Pages on an iPad. So the first page is an un-numbered cast page of a play. The first page of dialogue (page 2 of the document) will be numbered as page 1.

Basically what you need to do is make page 1 a section and then all pages starting with 2 a second section. Then don't use any header or footer on that first section, but a header or footer on the second section, which is set to start on page 1 instead of page 2.

On the iPad, you would add a new section by tapping on the ❡ button above the keyboard and choosing Section Break. Then tap the more button (...) at the top and then Document Setup and then More Options to set a header or footer to show a page number. Then use that same button, Document Setup, but tap the Section tab at the top. Then you'll see the Page Numbering options to set the Start At to 1.

Hi Gary, The above question about page numbering is mine. Is there a tutorial for doing what you described for Pages on an Ipad? Your tutorial is great, but it’s not for an Ipad. I tried to follow your printed directions above and got inserted blank pages in my document, then I somehow got the insert without the blank pages but then got two page 1s, as your tutorial did at first. But there’s no side bar of sections in different colors on an Ipad’s Pages program. So I’m still confused.

Mary: Sorry, I was being brief when describing the steps as I didn't know your level of experience with Pages for iPad. It is hard to explain where things are on an iPad since so many buttons and elements don't have names, just symbols. Here is a video where I show one way to do this: https://youtu.be/C003pZnvxdo

Hi Gary, I now have the first page not numbered but the second page is still page two instead of page 1, but that seems like progress. I think the problem might be that you have pages in orange squares on the left side of the typed page, but I don’t have these. How did you get those orage squared pages to appear? Thanks again. Sorry these questions are so basic. You’re right about things not having names on an Ipad!!

Mary: Those are just the page thumbnails, and they shouldn't matter. But you can bring it up by tapping on the button to the right of Documents to the left and selecting Page Thumbnails. I show you how to start the pages at 1 in the video above, right around 0:53.
