How Do I Transfer All the Information From One Computer To a New One?

I’ve purchased a new MacBook Pro and need to transfer all the information (files, photos, apps etc) from my older MacBook Pro to the new one. The older MacBook Pro is using El Capitan and the new one will have Sierra. I use Time Machine and am up to date on the back-ups. I will, of course, back-up prior to the transfer.

Apple has a process for this using the Migration Assistant. You can read about the details here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204350.

The process is pretty easy, and you are prompted each step of the way. Since you are using Time Machine, you should probably select that as your method.

Thanks Gary for your quick response and information. Your recommendation of Migration Assistant was perfect and painless and we did end up using Time Machine as the source.
