I have accidentally added an event to the iPhoto 11 sidebar, cannot exactly remember how but i think i just clicked and dragged it in, and i have tried removing by CTRL-clicking on it but no contextual menu appeared, i have tried clicking and dragging it out with little joy and i have tried clicking on it and hitting delete and that didn’t work. How can i remove the item, am i not doing something obvious?

Control+click on the item, or right+click. Then you should see a contextual menu. Choose "delete" from the menu.
No such menu; nothing happens when i right click or Control click on the item
Which version of iPhoto do you have? Which item, exactly, are you Control+Clicking on?
My macbook is less than 2 weeks old so i assume the latest version, below is a link to a screnshot of the sidebar i am trying to remove an event - cant be 100% though as i am new to iphoto - called 'GCSE Geography Trip'

Ah, I see. It is under "Recent" -- that is just a list of recent events that you have created. So that sections just automatically updated to show the most recent events. You can't alter it, it will just change on its own as you access other events and those become more recent. Maybe try creating a bunch of fake events with some sample photos if you really want to push that out of that list.
oh right, ok thanks, so it wasnt me that accidentally added it to the sidebar then…?
No. It is just a list of "recent" events.
BTW, you can hide that list. Roll your mouse over next to where it says "recent" and you'll see a "Hide" button appear.
Ahhh, yh! Thanks for the help
One of my added items in recents simply disappeared when I went to preferences and unticked show last (x) month album and retick again. But make sure you have no photo under that item.
