I would get QuarkXPress Lite or Pagemaker Lite if they existed, but no such luck. I don’t need pre-press or color separation. I’m currently using the Publishing Document portion of Microsoft Word/Office 2008 and it is extremely pitiful. What is this iWork and Page I hear about?
thank you

Use Pages. Pages is a very good basic layout app. And it is easy to use and cheap.
See episode 532 to see how it works. http://macmost.com/basic-layout-with-pages.html
Well I bought it, only to find it does not allow proper pair kerning. Do you know of a "basic" (i.e. way less expensive than QuarkXPress or PageMaker, or even Adobe InDesign) page layout program that supports proper pair kerning?
Proper pair kerning? That's pretty hard core. Didn't know that was what you were looking for. I found this article, does it help? http://www.fonts.com/aboutfonts/articles/finetypography/spacingtype.htm
Perhaps if you need something like that you really need to move to a more expensive pro solution, maybe?
