What Do I Do When APFS Is Not an Option When Reformatting a USB Flash Drive?

I am following the steps in the video tutorial to reformat a USB Flash Drive (great by the way), to use as a backup. However, at the point to click on the Erase button to reformat, the options to format it to show only 5 options and APFS does not show up. Any ideas? Thank you! I have not had space to update to I have macOS Catalina Version 10.5.4 and then …5.6, so that is why I’m doing this.

My guess is that you aren't trying to reformat the drive, but are instead trying to reformat the Volume on that drive. You can't switch formats on just the volume and mix and match formats like that.

In Disk Utility, select View, Show All Devices. Then you'll actually see the drive on the left, not just he volumes on the drive. Now select the drive, not the volume on it. Now you can select APFS and reformat the entire drive.
