Why Does My Disk Utility Show Two Hard Disks?

When I open Disk Utility it shows two hard disks? I am using Catalina and have an external hard disk for back up.

    That's right. Catalina introduced the read-only System volume. This is a huge security improvement. Apple has a page on it here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210650
