Hi, this is Gary with Mac Most now. Today lets take a look at the seven most common user interface mistakes that Windows users make when switching to Mac.
Understanding the major differences between Windows Mac is actually usually pretty easy. It’s the tiny little things that give people trouble. Like, for instance, number one on the list is Windows users always end up accidentally renaming files in the finder. This is because that in Windows, you can select a file and then hit the enter key which then launches the program, but it doesn’t work that way on Mac. So on Mac, if you select an application then hit enter, you’re in a mode to rename that application. A confused Windows user may accidentally do that and change the name of the app.
So, number two is the maximize button. In Windows, this will expand the window to the full size of the screen, but on Mac it only expands the maximum ammount of size needed to view all of the content. So here, in Safari, we’ve got the Apple homepage. If we hit the green maximize button, we typically get a window that’s large enough to contain all the content inside of the webpage. We don’t expand to full screen. In order to expand to full screen you have to grab the bottom right hand corner and expand it manually.
Which brings us to number three, resizing windows. In Windows, you grab the edge of a window, and drag them to resize. On Mac, you grab the lower right-hand corner and use that to resize.
Another common mistake used is minimizing a window rather than hiding it. Minimizing a window actually minimizes just that one window the application. The application is still running and it puts that document in the dock. It’s still using a lot of processing power to update what’s shown in the dock and the app is actually still there. Other windows may be open. Hiding it is probably what most people want to do in this case, which actually takes the entire application and moves it away. It’s still running in the background but it’s not using as much system resources as minimizing does.
So to minimize, you press the yellow button and that would simply hide that single window and put it down here in the dock. Other windows are still there and you can minimize those as well, having several minimized windows from a single application. But hiding, which can be done by going up here to the main menu for the application or by pressing command h in which the applications will instantly and quickly remove the applications completely and it’s easy to bring it back by using command tab for intance or just clicking on the application again in the dock.
So related to all this is the fact that Windows users are used to clicking on the top of a window to quickly maximize it. Well, in the Mac, it doesn’t work that way. Instead, when you go to the top of an application and double click on the window it simply minimizes that window. It wont actually maximize it like the maximize button.
Windows user will often also close a window for an application thinking the application is closed. That’s cause that’s true on windows. If you’ve got one document application open and you close it, the application quits. But not so on Mac. You close the last document window or say word processor or your browser, the application’s actually still running and ready for you to open a new window to begin something new.
And last, but certainly not least, is the difference in the keyboards between Mac and Windows. The main difference is the command key, or the Apple key as it is sometimes called on the Mac. This is used just like the control key on Windows, but, to confuse things further, there is a control, a ctrl key, on Mac. This is used like the right mouse button on Windows. So when you want to do something like issue a menu shortcut command, you, on Mac, would press the command or the Apple key and type the key for that command. The control key you use, you press control and you click somewhere to bring up a right menu. Of course, different programs will use both these keys in lots of different ways but for the most part, command is used to do keyboard shortcuts and control is used as a way to bring up a contextual menu.
Now, these are by all means no the only mistakes Windows users make when switching to Mac, and if you’ve got one you would like to list, please leave it as a comment to this post at Mac Most dot com. Thanks and until next time, this is Gary Rosenzweig with Mac Most Now

MacMost Now 141: Sharing Files With Your iPhone

Hi this is Gary with Mac Most Now! Today lets look at two applications for the iPhone that will allow you to share files with your Mac.
So old fashioned iPod’s have one interesting advantage over iPhone’s, it’s that you can use them as external hard drives, You can save files to them, you can back up to them. iPhone’s can’t do that. But there are two third party applications now that allow you to share files directly from your Mac to your iPhone, and what’s even better is they don’t require that the two be connected, atleast not on a wired connection. You can connect them just via your local network. And do it over the air. Let’s take a look at both of them.
So the first app that we’re going to look at is called Air Sharing. And Air Sharing is seven dollars and it allows your iPhone to be used as an external hard drive on your Mac. Just like you would any other external hard drive or network drive. All you need to do is look at the IP address of your iPhone, make sure they are both connected to the same wi-fi network, and connect using the finder in Mac to go ahead and view the files there. You can actually even connect on windows as well. And then you can drag and drop files to and from the iPhone.
So this is Air Sharing. After it opens up, it will show you the two folders that you got by default: Public and Samples. In the public folder are all the files that I have added to my iPhone’s hard drive. I can go ahead and connect to this by using this IP address here at the bottom. So I just type this into my Mac just like I would connect to any other drive or computer on my network, and these files will appear. And once I’ve transferred files to here, I can go ahead and review them which is probably the greatest strength of Air Sharing. So for instance here is a HTML document. And I can expand it and view it and can even turn it on its side. I can also view images, I can view PDF files, I can expand and look at them, and I can even listen to music and watch video as well. So there’s about any standard file that I drop into Air Sharing, I can, that I have access to when I’m not connected.
The next application is called Drop Copy. And Drop Copy is available for $5. And what Drop Copy does is basically the same thing with a little bit easied interface. Now Drop Copy is a little different in that you don’t only need this application on your iPhone but you also need an application on your mac. The Mac application will create a little hole in your desktop and you can drag and drop files into it as long as Drop Copy is running on your iPhone. Once you put something in there, you can actually look in four preset folders: Docs, PDF’s, Image’s, and Audio. When you select a file you can view it and see a quick view of it. You can also, for instance, look at the image here and do a quick look but also go ahead and click here to do a full view.
Now one advantage of Air Sharing is that you don’t have to install anything additional on your Mac. Which means its easy to connect with your Mac or somebody else’s Mac, or another computer that may be on the local network. Another great advantage of Air Sharing is the fact that you can view all these file formats very easily and very nicely. Now its always been difficult to view important files on your iPhone. For instance, say if you have a PDF that’s very important you can e-mail to yourself, but depending on the settings of your email connection and your server, you may not actually have it available if you’re not connected to the internet. But here you could reliably put a PDF or a text file or whatever you want onto your iPhone, and know you have access to it with or without a network later on.
Now Drop Copy is a little but easier to use and it has a big advantage in that you can transfer from iPhone to iPhone as well. But it does take an additional piece of software to run on your Mac so its going to be hard to connect to a new computer without first installing that. And it was a little chunkier when I used it.
So there are two great options for getting files onto your iPhone and using it as an external hard drive, and viewing files on your iPhone. Even while your not connected to the network.
Now I also want to tell you about a new part of the MacMost.com website. If you go to MacMost.com/ iphoneapps you can get a complete directory of all the apps available in the iTunes store. You can access it a lot quicker than you can through the iTunes application, and you can also look and see actually what is new in the store today, what has been updated today, and you can sort in various ways. So for instance you can see what new free games are available today. So go ahead and check out this new part of the MacMost.com website.

MacMost Now 140: Google Search Tricks

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008 by rosenz

Gary Rosenzweig takes a look at some of the different ways you can search using Google. You can search inside a Web site, related Web sites, locally, define words, convert numbers, stock prices, quotes, and local times.

Video Transcript (Click to Expand)
Hi this is Gary with Mac Most Now. Today I’m going to show you how to search Google, in a different way. There are lots of cool tricks you can do when searching Google. For instance, my favorite is to actually force Google to search in a certain site. So, if you know the information you want is at a site, but your just not sure where on that site, you can use Google. For instance, if you want to search for ringtones, and you know you want to find it at Mac Most, you do site colon without a space there, the url of the website. So, ringtones space site colon MacMost.com will give you only results from MacMost.com. If there’s a website you like and you want to find other websites like it, you can use the related modifier. Just type related, followed by a colon and no space, and immediately, the name of the website. Google will suggest other sites like it. Google also has the ability to limit your search to something local. For Instance, if you want to search for a restaurant, but you only want it to be nearby, just add your US zip code, right after the search term. You’ll get local entries. Google also has some interesting functions built right into the search function. For instance, if you type weather space and the name of the city, a cool forecast right at the top of the search results. Another one you can do is use the word define and it will give you definitions for that word. You can also go ahead and type math problems. For instance, and you’ll get a calculator right at the top. Ok, here’s one that’s so useful. So, you need to call somebody, but their not in your time zone. Maybe their even a few time zones away. Your not quite sure what time it is for them and you want to make sure you’re not calling them too early or too late. All you need to do is go into a Google search and type time space and the name of the city and you get the exact time, right now. Need to do some conversions? Well, Google knows all. Say for instance, somebody tells you that well, something’s 52 kilometers away, type 52 km in miles, and you’ll get a conversion to miles right there at the top. And if you like numbers, all you need to do for a stock price is to type the stock symbol at the top and you’ll get a quick little Google Financial readout. Sometimes a typical search term just wont do. Instead you want Google to complete a phrase. For instance, you can type if you want to get Albert Einstein quotes, albert Einstein said, and then put and asterisk right after that and you’ll get search results that are Albert Einstein said and what he said. There’s actually even more than this, and Google’s adding more all the time. You can go to a Google features help page to go to see some of these cool search modifiers and some examples of their use. Until next time, this is Gary Rosenzweig with Mac Most Now.

MacMost Now 139: Converting Video to MP3 Audio

Monday, September 29th, 2008 by rosenz

Gary Rosenzweig looks at two ways to convert video files to mp3 audio files so you can listen to them on audio-only devices. The first method uses QuickTime Pro and iTunes. The second method uses FFMpegX.

Video Transcript (Click to Expand)
Hi this is Gary with Mac-Most now. Today I’m going to show you how to create an MP3 audio file from a video. The other week when I was at blog week expo, I got asked this question a couple of times “How Can I Create An Audio Podcast from my Video Podcast so I can have a separate feed for people that only want audio?” This can be very useful for someone that, say, has a older Ipod without video or uses an Ipod shuffle. You would want just an Mp3 audio file in this case and not a video file. It also could be useful if you listen to a lot of podcasts, and want to listen to some video podcasts without having the video component attached because you may have one of those Ipods, or some other device, or you may just be listening in the car. And converting from video to audio is simply a matter of stripping out the video track. But you need a piece of software to do that, and there’s two different options I’m going to go over. So the first option I want to look at is using Quicktime Pro and Itunes. Now Quicktime Pro costs $30.00 from Apple, but that’s a piece of software that I don’t think anyone who does even a little bit of audio or video editing should be with out. So, if you are going to convert a podcast that’s not yours into audio, you would simply look for that file for that podcast. So for instance, you select the individual episode and you can control click on it and say “show in finder”. And this will bring up the actual mp4, or m4v file, for that episode. And then what you want to do, is you want to go ahead and open this in Quicktime Pro. Now, you can do this by simply dragging and dropping which I’m going to do right now. And it will open up a Quicktime Pro Window right here with the video in it. And at this point I can actually go to “export”, and I have a bunch of different options to export. One of those options is going to be “Sound To”, and you get 3 options. So you can choose “Sound to AIFF”. Unfortunately you cannot convert a video or anything to mp3 in Quicktime Pro. SO you have to choose another file format. Once you export as an AIFF, it’ll export it in a format that can be read by another program such as iTunes. So now we’ve exported that. OK, so I saved the AIFF file to my desktop, but I’m going to move it here so you can see it, and now I’m going to go ahead and drag it here into iTunes here, into my music library. And will place that with my other music here at the top since I haven’t sort by “date added”. And the I can “control click” or “right click” on it, and select create mp3 version. And this will duplicate the file basically, but it’s an mp3. Since I’ve added it to the music library and I have iTunes set to my music management, it has taken it out of this podcast directory here, and put it in the regular music directory under “unknown artist” and “unknown album”. And there’s the “AIFF” version and there’s the new mp3 version. And I can delete one, I can actually do it through the itunes interface, you can see there both here. Delete it, Remove it from the library, and move it to the trash just leaving the mp3 version which will now sync with any device that iTunes syncs to, even if it doesn’t support video.
Now that’s a great way to convert one file at a time, here and there, if you need it for listening. But if you want to do this on a regular basis, or you are a podcast producer, and you want to do this for every episode you probably want a more streamline solution. Enter FFMPEGX which is a great utility which I use for video but it can also be used to convert video to audio. Let’s take a look. So, here I’ve got my mp4 files, video files, and I downloaded ffmpegx and installed it. Here’s what the interface looks like. It’s a drag and drop interface, so what I want to do is I want to drag into the source format, the video right here. And it knows that it’s an mp4 video. And I want to do a target format. Now I have a whole bunch of different options you can’t see, but at the bottom there’s movie audio to mp3. I select that, it says “to mp3″. Now, I can customize it if I want or I can leave the defaults. I can customize by clicking on audio and selecting a whole bunch of different options right here. I’ll stick with summary and I’ll click on encode, and it will go ahead and launch another program here that actually does the conversion. And once this is done, won’t take long just to convert video into audio, I’ll end up with the mp3 file in the same directory as my original mp4 file. You can see it creating it, right here, right now. There we go, and here we have the mp3 file. So you can see that’s a much more streamlined process. And there. I open it up in Quicktime. I have my audio. So that’s a lot easier to do, and you can actually batch process these, you can drag and drop a whole bunch on and you can keep hitting encode and it will actually encode multiple ones at the same time. So there are two versions of converting video into mp3 audio files. If you like this tutorial and you like this podcast, please tell your friends to subscribe at MacMost.com/itunes.html. One thing, I’ve changed my twitter address. It used to be twitter.com/garyrosenzweig all spelled out. That’s a lot to type in. So, I got the shorter twitter address, twitter.com/rosenz. So my apologies if you tried to subscribe to me in the last couple of days, and got nothing when you went to the old address. Until next time this is Gary Rosenzweig at Mac Most now. Thanks.

Update: MacMost viewer Nick pointed out that you can also use GarageBand 3 to do this. Just drag and drop the video into GarageBand, delete the video track, and export as a .mp3 file.

MacMost Now 138: Managing Podcasts in iTunes 8

Friday, September 26th, 2008 by rosenz

Gary Rosenzweig looks at how to manage podcast subscriptions in iTunes 8. You can now manage your subscriptions on a per-podcast basis in iTunes 8.

Video Transcript (Click to Expand)
Hi, this is Gary Rosenzweig with MacMost Now. On today’s episode, let’s look at how to manage your podcasts in iTunes 8.
So iTunes 8 added the ability to manage each podcast individually, having different settings for when new episodes are downloaded, and how they’re kept. So here we are in iTunes 8. And I’ve selected podcasts from the left, so these are the podcasts that I subscribe to. The blue dot means there’s an episode of that podcast that I haven’t listened to yet. If I click on the little triangle here, I can expand and see the episodes. So I can see here in black, the episodes I’ve downloaded, and in grey, the ones I haven’t. The ones I haven’t, I can click on the get button to actually get that episode.
Now, if I want to control how I download episodes of a podcast, I select the podcast and click on the settings button. Now, the only way to get to this is clicking on the settings button. Control clicking or right clicking won’t bring up this menu. So I click on settings and I get a podcast settings dialog. Now its settings for, and you can see MacMost Video Podcast. I can actually change that to look at the settings for any of the other podcasts I listen to, or click on podcast defaults to see the default settings. So for MacMost Video Podcast, it’s now set to default settings. I can uncheck that, and I can go ahead and say when to download new episodes: download most recent one, download all of them, or do nothing and let me manually click the get button to get episodes. I can also say how many episodes to keep. The default is last 3 episodes, so it’ll delete episodes older than that. Then also select when to check for new episodes, so check every day, every week, every hour, or manually. And you can set this for every podcast individually, and also set the default settings that will be for any podcast that you’re not managing manually like that.
Now, one of the things that you may do is you may go through some of these old episodes here and decide you don’t want them listed anymore. So, you go ahead and select them, press delete, and remove them from your library. And this cleans up the listing and only shows the most recent episodes, or whichever ones you want. Now, if you’ve done this, and you want to actually see the old episodes again and get the chance to download them, all you need to do is hold down the option key when you open up the triangle here, and it’ll actually go out to the feed, and get all the episodes again.
Now there’s several different ways to look at podcasts in iTunes. You’ve got the list view, like this. But you can also do the new grid view, which is new in iTunes 8, and you can go through all the different podcasts you download that way. You can do it by category, and you can just look at new as well. You can even adjust the icon size if you like. In addition, you’ve got, of course, the cover flow view, like this. And below that, it will actually list some information about the podcast, in the same view as the list view. Some other options you have is to see a browser at the top. Command B will bring this up, and then you can look at your podcasts by artist, and album, just like you would look at music. It usually doesn’t apply, but sometimes it can be useful. Another thing you can do is you can look at the artwork by clicking command G, and you will see the artwork for the different podcasts on the left. If you want a customized list view, you can click on command J and come up with view options. So, you can remove or add new things to display in the columns. For instance, if you want to click on size, you can go ahead and do that, and you’ll get a new column to the right here, that shows the size of each of these podcasts. You can also go ahead and adjust your columns, like that, and move things around. Then, when you select a podcast, you can go ahead and click the arrow to the right, to be taken to the iTunes Store, directly to that listing. And there you can go ahead and click on a link to the website, you can read reviews, and you can leave your own review as well.
You can also create your own playlist, with podcast. Just go down here to the plus sign (+) at the bottom, and go ahead and add a new playlist. And then you can go back to podcasts, and drag and drop episodes into that playlist. And then those episodes appear there. And these will sync with your iPod and iPhone.
One of the ways I like to manage my podcasts is by creating a smart playlist. You do that by going to file, new smart playlist, and you get this dialog. Then I can go ahead and say I want to create a smart playlist that contains only podcasts, and I want it to limit to 25 items, selected by the most recently added. So it’ll be the 25 most recently added podcast episodes. And then I said select live updating, so it’ll constantly be updated as new podcasts are downloaded. I’m gonna go ahead and name this, and I’ve got my playlist right here of all my most recent podcasts in the order that they were downloaded. Now I can go ahead and sync this with my iPod and iPhone, and I’ve got a really convenient way to listen to the new podcasts while driving in the car, without having to go and look through each podcast artist and find out which episode is new.
So the advantage of subscribing to podcasts and iTunes is you get your content automatically downloaded to your machine, you don’t have to remember to go to the website and see if there’s a new episode, and they’ll automatically sync with your iPod and iPhone. Now, if you don’t want to keep that much stuff on your hard drive, it’s also great, because it’ll automatically delete older episodes, only keeping the most recent one. And it’s easy to go back and find older episodes and re-download it if you want.
So, you’re probably already subscribing to this podcast, but if you have friends that use Macs and iPods and iPhones, you might want to tell them about iTunes and how to subscribe to podcasts. And be sure to mention this one as a good one to start. Until next time, this is Gary Rosenzweig with MacMost Now.

MacMost Now 137: The Otterbox Defender for iPhone 3G

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008 by rosenz

Gary Rosenzweig takes a look at the Otterbox Defender for iPhone 3G. This rugged case protects from drops and scratches. It is probably the ultimate protection from an iPhone.

Video Transcript (Click to Expand)
Hi, this is Gary. Today on MacMost Now, let’s take a look at the king of iPhone cases.
So most of you who have watched this show for a while know I have this thing about iPod and iPhone cases; most of them are pretty next to worthless. They’re little more than scratch protection, and they won’t stop you from dropping them, or, they won’t stop them from breaking if you do drop them. But there are some exceptions, and of course my favorite exception is the Otterbox series; the Defender series. Now, I have one for my first-generation iPhone, and I’m so happy that I finally got mine for the 3G iPhone.
So the case is this very strong polycarbonate shell. It surrounds the iPhone and snaps into place. Then there’s this membrane, made of silicon, that fits all around it. Each one of the holes– say, for the headphone jack, for the dock, even for the ringer switch– uh, has a little cover that snaps kinda into place around it. It’s got a cover for the screen and has a little glass windows for the camera, and for the little Apple logo.
Here’s a closer look; you can see that there’s spots at the top for the earpiece and for the proximity sensors; you can see the area at the bottom where you can open it up for the dock… and at the top for the headphone as well.
So the good part is: complete protection. It’ll protect it from drops, it’ll protect it from scratches. It’ll protect your screen and it’ll even protect it from moisture. And the belt clip is solid as well.
But it’s not perfect either. The screen protector creates a little bubble underneath it that can be annoying when doing something like watching a movie. Also, the belt clip can press up against your side a little bit.
So if you’re prone to dropping your iPhone a lot, or if you’ve got a line of work where you really need to protect your iPhone, then the Otterbox Defender is for you. You can get it for fifty bucks; you can find out more at otterbox.com. Until next time, this is Gary Rosenzweig with MacMost Now.

MacMost Now 136: Free Screen Capture Software

Hi, this is Gary from MacMost Now. Today I want to tell you about some quick, easy, and free screen-capture software. So, while I was at the blog-world expo in Las Vegas this last weekend, I came across the TechSmith booth. They’re mostly known for Camtasia software on windows, which hopefully will soon be coming to Mac. But they already have a Mac product, and it’s call Jing. Jing is really easy to use screen-capture software. I’ll let Katie from TechSmith explain.
We were using our existing applications SnagIt and Camtasia studio to do a lot of screen-video-recording and screen-capture and we though, well, geez, wouldn’t it be awesome if you could just easily share this information instead of having to produce a file, save it, put it in an email, attach it, send it, send the file, and have someone download it and then watch the video or open the link - open the image, and so we thought: all right we have this technology all we have to do is just make it easy and just have this share button. So, the developers went to work and they created the product that is now called Jing Project, and um very simple, easy to share, and we were using it so much we though, well, geez, wouldn’t everyone else love to use a product like this? And visual communication is something we feel really strongly about, so we wanted to get Jing out there and help people be able to visually communicate instead of just explaining everything in words, so, check out Jing.
So, Jing has a pretty unique interface. It’s got this little sun that appears on your desktop and you can move it around to the corners of your screen, or the sides, or the top, and you can go ahead and roll over it and then click on the Capture button. Then you define an area that you want to capture. So, if you wanted to show somebody something in the preferences, here, you’d select an area, and then select if you want to do an image, or a video, or whatever. You do the image. Once you draw the image it grabs it, and now you can draw stuff on it. Like, you can draw an arrow, or write a piece of text. That type of thing. When you’re finished, you can decide where to save it. You can even save it to a free service called ScreenCast.com from TechSmith, that puts it up and creates a place for you to share things. You can also save it to your Flickr account, or your own FTP server, or just to a file. Same options are available for video. Jing’s very easy to use, and when you share something with somebody it’s actually done in flash format, so it’s gonna be widely avail and cross-platform. Unfortunately of course it also saves as a flash format when you save files locally, so it’s not gonna be as useful for doing something you wanna put into an iMovie movie or use in another way.
So, everything about Jing is about making it real easy, the least number of steps, the easiest way to share something. So, if you want to point out something to a friend, you can send a quick screen-shot of what you mean, or do a really quick video. So, it’s all about ease of use, not necessarily features. The best thing about Jing is it’s free. So, you might as well download it and try it. You can go ahead and find it at jingproject.com
Until next time, this is Gary Rosenzweig with MacMost Now.

Ahoy there mateys and welcome to another episode of MacMost Now. In the past I’ve told you about ways to take movies from your DVD collection and store them on your laptop or iPod or iPhone so that you can watch them, say, on an airplane trip. Well, there’s a new piece of software that does this in an even better way. It’s called Drive-in. Drive-in is a cool piece of Mac software that you insert a DVD into your computer and you can go ahead and make a copy of that DVD on your hard drive that behaves pretty much as if you had that DVD in the drive. Not only that, but when you use Drive-in, you have the ability to import in all sorts of information about the DVD, so you not only have all the contents of the DVD, but you also have all the information that is on the box of the DVD. You can store it in a library of DVDs so you can take several with you and store them for later use. So the advantages of Drive-in are: 1) It takes the entire DVD, all the extra features, all the extra audio tracks, everything — it’s just like having the DVD in the drive, and the quality is the same as the DVD. 2) Another advantage is speed. It actually doesn’t take very long. It only took about 15-20 minutes to copy a DVD to my drive. When you actually rip a DVD using something like HandBrake, it can take hours to do the same thing, and it’s just not possible when you want to do it just before you leave for the airport. 3) The third advantage is it’s kind of more legal. You see when you rip a DVD to a file, you’re actually decrypting the encryption code on there, which is illegal according to the digital writing copyright act, if you care about that. But Drive-in is not decrypting anything, it’s just making a straight copy of the DVD, and it’s kind of keeping it safe so there’s no piracy. So, if you’re concerned about the legalities, Drive-in is a better option for you. Although whether it’s a completely fail-safe legal option is for the lawyers and the courts to decide. Now the disadvantages of Drive-in are: 1) It’s not free. 2) It can’t be used to put movies on your iPod or iPhone. It only works on the drive of a Mac Book or Mac Book Pro. So if you travel al lot, particularly if you watch DVDs on your Mac Book when you travel, I think this software is a must-have. You can get it from flip4mac.com. It costs $39 for a single license.

MacMost Now 134: Creating iMovie Titles With Keynote

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008 by rosenz

Gary Rosenzweig looks at how to use iWork’s Keynote program to make animated titles for use in iMovie. You can use the transitions and special effects in Keynote to build an opening sequence, and then export it as a video to import into iMovie.

Hi this is Gary with MacMost Now. Are you frustrated by the very limited number of title sequences you can get out of iMovie? Well, there’s a way to use another Apple application, Keynote, to generate title sequences that you can use in iMovie. Let’s take a look.
Okay, so, in iMovie you can see there’s really only about 12 different title sequences, and you can vary them somewhat. But there’s really not very many that you can use. And it’s not very easy to create like a real set of titles for your movie. But, let’s look at Keynote. So Keynote of course is presentation software that comes with iWare. It’s a competitor for Powerpoint. So it’s got some great transitions in it. So we go ahead and create a simple set of slides that’s actually a title sequence. And we can control all sorts of things about this. So for instance, in the format bar here we can make fonts larger, we can change the color of them. Anything we want to do. We can go ahead and change the font. There we go. And we can add another slide. And we can even delete blocks, add blocks, add graphics. Like that. Now we’ve got two slides that could be an opening sequence. And then we can create a transition between the two of them. Okay, so then when we have two slides, we can go ahead and select the transition pallet here. And select an effect for the transition. So for instance here on this first slide we can effect a way for it to come in, and actually show it to us on this little preview screen. So for instance we can go ahead and do a barn door for the next thing. Or we can go ahead…shwoosh…like that. And let’s try this one here. Now when we play, it does a little effect there. We can also forget about the transition between these, and we can do individual text transition for instance. We can go ahead and do what’s called a build in and do something like flames. And now when we play it, we get a cool video technique like that. Now once you have the effect you want, you can make the sequence as long as you want, you can drag images in, you can add all sorts of builds, and different transitions. All you need to do then, at that point, is say export. File Export. And then you have Quicktime as an option. You can go ahead and do time. So the duration of each slide. Then you can go ahead and select the format. You can do full quality, large. Include the audio if you put any sound in the individual slides or not. And then you go ahead and export it. And once you’ve exported it, you now have a Quicktime movie that you can drop in to iMovie and use as your opening sequence, or closing sequence.
So here I built one. On the first frame I was able to drag the MacMost logo in there. I straightened up the font for this. And I created this second frame here as well. On the MacMost logo, I’ve actually got a transition of a comet from left to right, and then a comet from right to let. Get the most from your Mac. Then I have a transition between the two frames of confetti. And then, Mac most is going to…MacMost is going to build with a flame, and that’ll be my title sequence. So I go ahead and export it, and here’s what I end up with.
Okay so my example’s a little bit cheesy. But you get the general idea. You can use all sorts of cool transitions, fonts, layout options, in Keynote and export a really interesting opening, closing, or middle sequence for your iMove videos.
Okay, so, here’s the thing. I really would like more people to see MacMost now. And the best way to do that is to actually get a nice high ranking in iTunes. Because if you rank high in the iTunes podcast list, you’ll get more subscribers. But it’s a chicken and the egg thing. You see, in order to get a high ranking you need more subscribers in the first place. So here’s where you come in. If you’ve got friends who you think would enjoy the show and get something out of it, tell them about it. Just send them to MacMost dot com slash itunes dot html. There’s a little about the show there, and there’s a link for them to subscribe. And if I get some more subscribers to the show, then we’ll rank a little higher, and we’ll have more people watching.
Till next time, this is Gary Rosenzweig with MacMost now.

MacMost Now 133: Mobile Broadband

Monday, September 15th, 2008 by rosenz

Gary Rosenzweig talks about the mobile broadband service from Sprint that he has been using. With a wireless USB modem, he is able to get broadband speeds just about anywhere. Good as a travel solution, or as a backup to a connection at home or at work.

Hi, this is Gary with MacMost Now. Today I wanna show you a great alternative for broadband internet for traveling or just for everyday use.
Now way back at MacMost Now episode 2, I talked about these cool little usb sticks that you can get for your Macbook, Macbook Pro and Macbook Air that will give broadband internet access using usb mobile data network like the one from Verizon, Sprint, T-mobile, or ATT. Now, you can get this basically form any of those but the one that has the unlimited access is Sprint; the others cap their data bandwidth, so I went with the Sprint one and got this a while although and I’ve been using it ever since. Now, the cool thing about this Sprint card is that really ready for the Mac, so you plug this thing into your Mac and you instantly get an installer for this application that will connect you to the Spring Broadband network. And the application is a Mac data application so it runs great on the Mac, it evens has some extra apps and gps functionality built-in to this little dock, so you have access to all this. You hit connect and connected you can access all sort of data, as to how fast your connection is, how good your connection is and then how much bandwidth you are using. Now, the cost is about sixty(60) dollars a month and its not more than that, for some reason, I guess the taxes and fees for just pure data are lot less than they are for voice. So it comes may be about to sixty-two dollars a month for me; and the coverage has been excellent, in matter of fact, I’ve been able to use it in every hotel room I travel to and every airport I’ve gone to in the last six months; I was even able to use this while traveling on an interstate highway, through a couple of states on a recent road trip and I was constantly connected, I was amazed that I was actually able to go and log in to my server through the terminal, through ssh, and work on the server while traveling about 75 miles an hour for several hours. Now of course that doesn’t mean that coverage is everywhere, there are some places where coverage isn’t that great and there are blind spots just like with the regular mobile phone. For the advantage of having one of this isn’t just for travel, although that’s a huge advantage, I mean you take your count of how much sometimes the airports charge for broadband wifi access, and you take to count how much hotels charge you can simply make back your sixty dollars in one single trip per month. But then also you can get to use this while traveling around town; you can go and have dinner with somebody and wanna show something in your laptop, you got access. And also is more secure, when you think about it, this public wifi hotspots, they are not secure at all; but using your own little private network through this card is completely secure, is encrypted. So you can surf without worrying about somebody stealing your passwords from a local public wifi hotspot. Now, I assume that all the data networks are pretty much the same, so you can choose your favorite mobile company; but my experience has been with the Sprint card and I must say that I am very pleased with it, not only is good for traveling but it’s a very comforting backup to have, in case my home dsl or the internet connection goes out for some reason. To find more about what I go to sprint dot com(sprint.com) and click on plans and then click on mobile data plans. Now, since I’ve got my plan six months ago, they have actually switched sprint to be a 5 gigabyte bandwidth limit, just like the other networks. So it looks like you can look back you can pay sixty dollars for 5 gigs but for mobile access that’s still a lot of bandwidth, and it’s still hard to go over it, specially if you are only using it as your secondary internet access. Ok, so here is the deal, I love for more people to be able to see this show and the best way for them to do that is to be able highly ranked in itunes but you can’t be highly ranked in itunes until a lot of people subscribe so it’s like kind a chicken and the egg kind of thing; here is how you can help, if you can tell some of your friends, you may think you can get something out of the show, two subscribe to it; they can just go to MacMost dot com slash itunes dot html (MacMost.com/itunes.html) and if they subscribe to the show, it will help boost the ranking in itunes, which in return we will get more subscribers. So I really appreciated if you tell some of your friends about the show, thanks a lot, see you the next time.
