MacMost Forum / Pinging and Fingering

In Network Utility, I find reference to “ping” and “finger.” What do these mean, and when might I ever want to ping or finger?

    These fall under the category of “if you don’t know what they are, you don’t need them.” They are for people involved with networks and network connections. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ping and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finger_protocol
