You can send an app as a gift to a friend pretty easily. Just go to the app in the store in iTunes on your Mac or PC. Click on the down arrow next to the "Buy App" button. The first item you will see is "Gift This App." Then just fill out the info.
I haven't heard anything about iWork 11. It isn't clear that there will be an iWork 11 -- now with the Mac App Store Apple may just update the apps individually through there. I'm sure there will be new versions of Pages, Numbers and Keynote, but no idea when.

All the apps at the app store in itunes seem to be for iphone & ipad. What I`m I doing wrong, I need apps for my MBP.

The down arrow in the app store (clicking icon on my MBP) gives me 2 options, "Tell a friend" & "Copy Link". These don`t seem work.

Ah, you just said "App Store" in the question, which usually refers to what Apple calls the "App Store" -- iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad Apps. For the "Mac App Store" it is a different story. They haven't implemented a "Gift This App" function for the Mac App Store. Hopefully they will add that in the future. Until then, the best you can do is to buy them an iTunes gift card and tell them which app to buy.

iTunes gift cards are credited to your Apple account, which is the same thing, so if you use what Gary said in his first post it will apply the balance to the account, and then the person will be able to use it in either store
