How Do I Send a SMS (text Message) From OS X Messages To a Non- iPhone?

Its easy to do this from my iMac to someone using an iPhone but what about people that don’t have an iPhone? Is there a way to send them a SMS/text message from my iMac using OS X Messages?
Thanks in advance for your help!

There are a number of ways. For instance, many SMS systems have a way to send someone a message by email. You would have to check with the person you want to send to, and then they would most likely need to check the web site or other documentation from their mobile phone company to see how to do it. For instance, it may be their phone number @ their mobile company. Like phonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com or something like that.
But they may not know the correct email address, or they may have turned this function off. Most carriers allow you to turn this email-to-sms function off in your account since it can be obviously abused by spammers.
So another alternative would be to use a web-based SMS service. The most obvious one would be Google Voice. With a Google Voice account you can send a text message using any web browser. There are other services like that, but I have never tried them.

So I get the persons cell phone email address ( 5551234@txt.att.net) and I enter it as an alternate email address in Contacts. Then I can text them from OS X Messages…right?

No. With that, you'd need to email them with your email client or web site.

I'm still confused. So how do I text them from my iMac to their Android cell phone? We're both on AT&T - if that's relevant.

You can't text from your mobile number to them because you need to use your mobile phone to do that. You can't text from iMessage because they don't have iMessage. So your only option is to sign up for another text service like Google Voice and use that. Or, just use your phone to text them.

Okay - thanks for clarifying the issue.

Gary, I think you misunderstood Kendell's question because he's confusion SMS with iMessage. You finally answered it on your last post but what I think he meant was how he can send an iMessage using OS X Messages program to non-iPhone users.

No, I understood that. But unfortunately, the answer is "you can't." But you can still send them messages from your Mac. So I included that info.
