All you need to do is go to Settings, General, Reset and the press "Erase All Content and Settings."
This is the same for all iOS devices (iPad, iPod Touch).
And it is pretty secure as it actually overwrites all data. So it could take a while. Best to have a full battery charge, or have it plugged in.

I tried this procedure and it ask for a four digit pin. What should I use to complete the reset?

I assume that would be the security pin, the same one you enter to unlock the phone.
