iPhones slowing down

Hi Gary,

I’m loving my iphone 4 which is fast and zippy. Before it I had an iphone 3G and didn’t upgrade to the 3GS. By the time I upgraded it had really slowed down and become sluggish and laggy.

My question is this: what is the actual mechanism of an iphone slowing down??
It cant be content overload because I deleted a whole bunch of stuff to release memory and it didn’t really help. Is it just age?? I am asking this to see if there is anything I can do to avoid the same thing happening to the iphone 4.

It would be build-up of content. Even if you clear out files, there are still things like autofill content and browser history, spelling history, etc. But a restore should always get you back to the original state.
Another factor is that updates are meant for the latest phone with the latest processor. So the iOS 3 update when applied to the iPhone 3G may have slowed it down because it wants to run on the faster iPhone 3GS processor.
