hey gary,
i got a litte problem with my speakers on my macbook 13,3” from late 2008. after i upgraded to 10.6 my speakers are turned of after every start up. it’s not a real big problem, but after 3 weeks now it’s getting buggy.
i always here that start up sound and than (after osx has started) the sound is turned off. that wouldn’t be so bad, but now i realized, that all the ringtones from skype doesn’t work either! so if someone calls me, i do hear nothing!!
i was sure that this would be a big deal, but i couldn’t find the answer yet!?! can you help me out there??
thanks

I haven't heard of this bug before. I don't have a solution. One thing to consider is to not shut off your machine -- I never do. See episode 240. But that doesn't solve the problem, it only masks it, of course. Still a good idea, though.
thx gary! so could it be possible that the problem is some where in my settings?? or, is that unlikely?? i think i wait for 10.6.2 before i contact apple...maybe the solution is coming with the update (hopefully).
It is possible. But it doesn't explain why it resets to 0 volume when you restart. You may want to look into clearing your PRAM. That's just one suggestion.
excuse me, but what is PRAM? i have never heard about it. so could you please give me a little hint! and could you explain me how to do it, or where i can find an explanation??
many thanks!!

PRAM is a little bit of memory that retains settings between startups. Hold down Command, Option, P, and R while booting your Mac to reset it. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 for more info.
many thanks for your help! here is the solution:

So, basically:
/Library/Preferences/Audio and delete:
com.apple.audio.devicesettings.plist
com.apple.audio.systemsettings.plist
Restart
