When I tried to follow the instructions in today’s email on how to encrypt a flash drive I got the following message:
A GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioning scheme is required
I have no idea what that means!!

It sounds like perhaps your drive isn't formatted as Mac OS Extended. Is that the case? Is it perhaps a Windows Fat32 format or something like that? You can select the drive and use Command+i to see the Format.
I have seen the same thing with a 2tb USB 3 drive that was formatted in the 10.12.6 Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended (journaled). The option for encrypted was not available, and I got the same message when right-clicking and selecting encrypt.
