Sounds like it has hung. You can force quit it: Command+Option+Esc and then choose it and press the Force Quit button.

Thanks, I did what you suggested. That utility window was not listed. safari and aol were. Should they be what I need close?

You can try quitting from Activity Monitor too. But an easier way is to just restart.
