How do I take a screenshot of a selected area of a window without the screenshot having a grey drop shadow on each side? I’m using Shift + Command + 5.
I want to show the members how to remove their message from the Chat bar of a conference. One method leaves a placeholder. So I have taken a screenshot of the Chat with the placeholders showing and I want to show that image in a conference. But the image has the grey drop shadows on either side which doesn’t look good in my presentation and uses space I need for another image. If I place two screenshots side by side to screenshot the pair of them as one image then the final image has a double grey space between the two images plus the grey space on either side.

So when using the Capture Selected Window option of the screen capture utility, you do get that shadow. But if you hold the Option key down when you click to take the screenshot, then you get only the contents of the window.

This is really strange but "hold the Option key down when you click to take the screenshot, then you get only the contents of the window." is not working for me today. It's giving me the grey shadows again. I tried it many times in case I didn't do it correctly but I definitely did do it correctly and I got the same result every time.
Elisabeth: You can always just switch to the selected area capture instead of a window capture and do that.
Elisabeth, if you use shift-command-4 you select the area that you want to capture. It doesn't have the drop shadows.
