This just started, but it seems the MBP does not really go to sleep. This happens when I shut the lid or do so in the Apple menu. The screen blanks, but the machine is still on and seems to get very hot while just sitting there. The MBP is usually plugged in, so the battery charge is not an issue. I’ve checked all the setting that I know of, nothing seems to help. Any suggestions?

It is either hardware or software.
Do you have any peripherals attached to the Mac? Printers? Scanners? Cameras? Anything hooked into USB or the display ports? Bluetooth, maybe?
Otherwise I would take a look at what is running on your Mac, even in the background.
The only thing I have hooked to the USB is an external hard drive, that Time Machine uses and nothing else. I use a network printer over WiFi.
Perhaps the Time Machine backup isn't done? Or maybe Spotlight is indexing the TM backup or something? How long have you let it sit, lid closed, before giving up?
I've let it set hours even days. I noticed it one morning when it was supposed to be asleep and was running and hot. I'll eject the hard drive and reconnect to see if that helps.
I've experienced that problem and I *think* it's been solved for me by making certain that iTunes is totally closed/quit/kaput. No guarantees, but worth consideration.
