Given that everything seems to syncing via iCloud and WiFi, is there ever a need to physically connect my iPad 2 to my iMac?

Apple has worked hard with iOS 5 to allow people to own iPads and other iOS devices without needing to sync with a computer at all.
If you do want to sync to back up to your computer, or transfer media from it., then wifi sync should meet almost all of your needs, though it can be slower and sometimes a little unreliable.
One thing you still need to use the cable for is transferring photos from your iPad to iPhoto. But an iPad 2 user might not need that as bad as an iPhone user.
Of course connecting will also charge the iPad, so it is useful in that way too.
