The long-anticipated update to the iPad version of iOS came out this week. The iPad has now caught up to the iPhone and iPod Touch with many new features.
In particular, multitasking allows the iPad to run several apps at once. Double tapping the home button will bring up a list of currently running apps and allow you to switch between them. Some apps, like Pandora, will already run in the background. This means you can listen to music while you work on other apps.
In addition, some apps have the ability to print directly to wireless HP printers with the new AirPrint feature. This is also new for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Only a few printers support this, but the future should bring a wider variety.
Mail on the iPad gets a significant update with the new iOS. It now has a unified inbox to view all incoming mail on all accounts. You also get threaded message viewing.
AirPlay is a feature for all iOS 4.2 devices that allows you to stream audio and video from your iPad over the new Apple TV. Another new feature for iPad users is app folders that allow you to group apps on your home screen. Also, game apps can now use the default app Game Center to track high scores and link up players for head-to-head gaming.
An existing Find My iPhone feature has been made free with the release of iOS 4.2. Previously, you had to be a MobileMe subscriber to use the service. Now you can use it with your free Apple ID.
The holiday shopping season is in full swing this week. Apple has already teased a special sale day for tomorrow, the Friday after Thanksgiving. They have done this for the past several years. Check the Apple site and Apple retail stores tomorrow morning to see what they will offer. Online retailers also have sales on Apple and Apple-related products.
