If you wish to disconnect from a Wi-Fi network without turning off Wi-Fi altogether, or switching to another network, just hold the Option key down and click the Wi-Fi symbol in the menu bar. The “Disconnect” option will appear under the name of the network you are currently using, along with other useful information.

Turn Wifi Off, is available when you click the Wi-Fi symbol, without the option key. Granted there are a lot of cool details when you option Wi-Fi symbol click. I've gotten into the habit of option clicking everything.
John: The idea is NOT to turn off Wi-Fi, just to disconnect from the current network.
