Can I Use 2013/15 iMac As a Second Screen?

Gary, I have a 2017 iMac, plus and older 2013/15 iMac. Can I use that as a second screen when Catalina arrives, and how do I prepare that older iMac, which will have older applications and operating system?

Maybe. It depends on exactly which model you have. This page describes how to use Target Display mode with an older iMac. Only three models have this feature. If the iMac you have is that "iMac (Mid 2011-Mid 2014)" model, then you should be able to do it.

You don't have to do anything with that older Mac to prepare it, as it won't be using its operating system or anything. It is a hardware feature.

One thing to note is that in my opinion, old iMacs do not make good second screens. I'm guessing that yours is one without a Retina display? In that case, you can get a brand new, much better 4K display for less than $400. It will take up less space, use less energy, and look much much better. You may be able to sell that old Mac and get a new display for just a bit more money.
